
The WHO’s announcement came two days after Germany said it would start offering boosters in September to the elderly, the immunocompromised and those who got the AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson shots, because they may be less effective than other vaccines. French officials said last month that the first groups to get vaccinated — nursing home residents, the elderly and some with serious health issues — can access extra doses in September, too. Hungary is allowing anyone to get a booster. And many more countries are moving toward or weighing the additional shots. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is examining such measures for the immunocompromised.
