GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers are hosting the Houston Texans in the preseason opener on Saturday night at Lambeau Field. Follow along all night for updates.
Halftime
Texans 13, Packers 7
Plenty happened in the final 53 seconds, but nothing impacted the scoreboard. Jordan Love was sacked and stripped, with Jonathan Greenard beating left tackle Yosh Nijman. Houston set up shop at the Packers’ 17, but Davis Mills was intercepted by Kabion Ento on the next play. Ento came off his man and grabbed a gift-wrapped interception.
Love’s first-half numbers were good – 12-of-17 passing for 122 yards and one touchdown – but most of the production came on the one scoring drive.
Jordan Love played the first half; he was replaced by Kurt Benkert for the second half.
Second Quarter
Texans 13, Packers 7 (53 seconds remaining)
Ka’imi Fairbairn booted a 25-yard field goal to cap a 17-play, 71-yard drive. The Texans converted four third downs on the drive, including a third-and-13 against cornerback Josh Jackson and a third-and-6 on a roughing penalty on Oren Burks. Jackson and safety Vernon Scott had pass breakups on second and third down to limit the damage.
Texans 10, Packers 7 (9:08 remaining)
Houston took over at Green Bay’s 42, thanks to a botched fourth-and-2 play in which quarterback Jordan Love and the rest of the offense weren’t on the same page and Devin Funchess couldn’t pull down Love’s desperation throw. Davis Mills’ 24-yard completion to rookie receiver Nico Collins gave the Texans a first-and-goal at the 5. On second down, Scottie Phillips slithered through the heart of the defense and pulled outside linebacker Jonathan Garvin into the end zone.
Packers 7, Texans 3 (14:15 remaining)
Jordan Love threw his first touchdown as a pro, though it was Kylin Hill who did the work. On second-and-10 from the 22, Love flipped a screen to the rookie running back. Center Josh Myers got him going and receiver DeAndre Thompkins made an excellent block around the 10. Hill dove head-first into the end zone for the score. His next stop was joining the fans with a Lambeau Leap.
End of First Quarter
Texans 3, Packers 0
Houston’s leading but Green Bay is on the move. After two third-down failures, Jordan Love threw a strike to tight end Jace Sternberger for a gain of 34. Sternberger got behind the linebacker and Love’s ball was perfect despite some late pressure. He followed that with three more completions: 8 yards to Devin Funchess, 10 yards to Malik Taylor on third-and-4 and 15 yards to Funchess, who made a sensational one-handed catch. The second quarter will start with a Green Bay first down on Houston’s 22.

How to Watch Packers vs. Texans in NFL Preseason
The game will air only on the Packers TV Network but there will be two replays on NFL Network. In other notes, a look at the quarterbacks, coaches and some familiar faces on the offensive lines.
Oren Burks struck again. Rookie quarterback Davis Mills bobbled the snap, didn’t get a bit of help from running back Scottie Phillips in protection and was blasted by Burks. The sack knocked Houston out of field-goal range.
Texans 3, Packers 0 (5:54 remaining)
It’s not been a great start for Jordan Love. On the opening series, he threw into double coverage on third-and-5. On the second drive, facing another third-and-5, he threw incomplete to Devin Funchess. This one wasn’t Love’s fault. Jacob Martin beat left tackle Yosh Nijman, which forced Love to step up in the pocket but right into defensive tackle Vincent Taylor, who blew threw the interior of the Green Bay line.
It wasn’t a great start for Green Bay’s new-look special teams, either. Ryan Winslow’s 53-yard punt was brought back 43 yards by Desmond King.
Texans 3, Packers 0 (7:44 remaining)
Tyrod Taylor completed three passes to Chris Conley against Josh Jackson as the Texans motored right down the field. On third-and-1, Oren Burks stopped David Johnson to hold the Texans to a 37-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn.
Green Bay’s starters included defensive tackle Willington Previlon and outside linebackers Tipa Galeai and Jonathan Garvin – three players with no guarantees of making the roster.
Skeleton Crew for Love
Jordan Love will be the starting quarterback and get most of the snaps for the Packers. He won’t be surrounded by Green Bay’s A-listers.
Inactive on offense are running back Aaron Jones (injured), receivers Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb (all healthy scratches), as well as Juwann Winfree and Equanimeous St. Brown (injuries), tight ends Robert Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis and Josiah Deguara (healthy scratches), and offensive linemen David Bakhtiari (injured), Elgton Jenkins and Billy Turner (healthy scratches).
Based on warmups, the No. 1 line will be left tackle Yosh Nijman, left guard Jon Runyan, center Josh Myers, right guard Lucas Patrick and right tackle Dennis Kelly.
Defensively, the inactives include defensive linemen Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and Kingsley Keke, outside linebackers Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Kevin King, and safeties Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos. Clark, Kake, Za’Darius Smith and King are out due to injuries. That leaves inside linebacker Krys Barnes and slot corner Chandon Sullivan as the only starters who will play.
In all, 30 players are not in uniform.
Players to Watch
Love, last year’s first-round pick, hasn’t played in a game for his team since Dec. 20, 2019, when he threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-41 loss to Kent in the Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl. That’s 603 days ago. His last game overall came 572 days ago, when he completed 4-of-6 passes for 26 yards in the Senior Bowl.
Love is one of 11 players to watch tonight.
