No. 5 Georgia extended its lead in the third quarter and is now in the driver’s seat to pick up one of the best wins any College Football Playoff contender could hope to achieve in Week 1 against No. 3 Clemson in Charlotte. The Bulldogs lead 10-0 and have been able to sustain both a potentially back-breaking interception by JT Daniels and defensive penalties that helped D.J. Uiagalelei and the Tigers offense extend drives that were otherwise sputtering.
Still, Georgia has been the more impressive team from top to bottom after 45 minutes of game action, and that’s reflected across the board. Clemson has been held to less than 100 yards of offense, and Uiagalelei has completed barely half of his attempts at 13 of 25 passing for 111 yards (4.4 yards per attempt). Clemson’s defense has done its part to make things difficult for Daniels and Georgia, particularly on the ground, but the inability to complement that effort with long, productive drives has made this game slip further and further away from the Tigers in the direction of Kirby Smart and Bulldogs.
